Auburn Man Charged for Drug-Related Death in Berks County

A Schuylkill County man has been charged with a drug-related death in Berks County.

According to the Berks County District Attorney's office, on April 16, 2018, Spring Township Police responded to a report of a deceased female at an apartment complex on Van Reed Road. It was suspected that the female had died of a drug overdose. One blue wax bag was found in the apartment which was consistent with heroin and fentanyl usage. Spring Township Detective Stephen Brock analyzed the victim’s phone and developed a suspect later identified as Drew Reed, of Auburn.

Detective Brock interviewed Reed and he admitted he had sold the victim drugs packaged in a blue wax bag on April 14, 2018. The blue wax bag was sent to the Pennsylvania State Police lab for testing and came back positive for fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl.

The victim’s blood was analyzed and also contained fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl.

An autopsy was conducted and the cause of death was determined to be acute fentanyl toxicity.

Reed is being charged with Drug Delivery Resulting in Death, Delivery of Controlled Substance, Possession of Controlled Substance, and Criminal Use of Communication Facility. He is currently awaiting arraignment while in Berks County Jail on a probation violation.
