Mahanoy City Police Make Arrests, Find Drugs as Part of New Program to Aggressively Seek Fugitives

The Mahanoy City Police has announced a program to aggressively seek out fugitives in the borough to improve the quality of life in the borough.


According to the Mahanoy City Police, in the upcoming summer months, the Mahanoy City Police Department is engaging in an operation to combat and suppress illegal activities and improve the quality of life within the borough.

The Preemptive Enforcement Program is designed to aggressively seek out fugitives, to prevent offenses that affect the quality of life for the residents of the community from occurring, and to apprehend criminals in the act of crime commission. 

The Mahanoy City police plans on accomplishing its mission by teaming up with area police agencies, the Borough’s Code Enforcement Department, and most importantly- the law-abiding members of the community. 

Yesterday, June 5th 2018 was the launch date of the Preemptive Enforcement Program. 

Patrolmen Jonathan McHugh and Thomas Rentschler participated in the detail. 

Following is a summary of the operations results.     

-At 3:55pm Hector Lopez, 46, of Mahanoy City was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant for Felony Burglary and Misdemeanor Simple Assault charges.  He was apprehended in the 300 Block of East Mahanoy Street.  Lopez was later arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Kilker and was committed to the Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $25,000.00 bail.

 -At 11:55pm, a traffic stop was conducted in the 300 block of West Centre Street. Kelly Kaczmarczyk, 40, of Mahanoy City was taken into custody on a Lebanon County Bench Warrant for the charge of Obstruction of Law Enforcement.  Kaczmarczyk faces additional summary violations as a result of the traffic stop.  She was committed to Schuylkill County Prison on the warrant.

A passenger in the vehicle Kaczmarczyk was operating, Heather Kessler, 33, also of Mahanoy City was found to be in possession of 3 bags of Methamphetamine and numerous items of drug paraphernalia.  She was processed, and Misdemeanor charges will be filed against Kessler.

-At 01:45am, Wednesday, officers detailed to the Preemptive Enforcement Program Detail apprehended a male who was prowling around abandoned residences in the area of W. Market and B Streets.  Edwin Astor, 52, Mahanoy City was taken into custody and processed for Loitering and Prowling at Nighttime.  The investigation into this matter is currently not complete.  Additional charges may be forthcoming.  A second actor who was with Astor fled the area, and police are continuing our investigation.
