Alvin A. Reese, 87, of Hazle Street, Tamaqua, PA died on Saturday, October 13, 2018 in Bethlehem, PA. 

He was the husband of the late Cleora M. (nee Scouten) Reese to whom he had been married for 60 years when she died in 2012. 

Born in Jermyn, Lackawanna County, PA on September 20, 1931, Alvin was a son of the late James and A. Evelyn (nee Eastlake) Reese. Having served as the pastor of the Primitive Methodist Church, Tamaqua for 25 years from 1975 until 2000, he served the Welcome Methodist Church, Landingville, PA for 8 years after his retirement. 

Prior to serving in Tamaqua, Alvin served the Primitive Methodist churches in Boone, Iowa from 1961-1963; Madison, Wisconsin in 1964; and Nanticoke, PA from 1965-1975. He graduated from Jermyn High School in 1949 and the Practical Training School, now Davis University, in Johnson City, New York. Alvin also received a degree in music. He was a member of the Primitive Methodist Church, Tamaqua and the Tamaqua Ministerium; was a founding board member of the Tamaqua Adult Day Care; and was a board member of the Primitive Methodist Bible Camp. 

Alvin is survived by sons, Mark A. Reese and his wife Nancy of Tamaqua and Timothy E. Reese and his spouse Glen Low of Wenham Massachusetts; grandchildren, Amy D’Agostino and her husband Jarrod of Laurel, Maryland and Eric J. Reese and his wife Alyssa Michelle of Hanover Township, PA; great granddaughter, Lucy D’Agostino; and numerous nephews and nieces. 

He was predeceased by his brothers James and Donald and sister Dorothy. 

Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, October 18 in the Primitive Methodist Church, 57 Hunter Street, Tamaqua with Pastor Richard Clemson and Gerald Petrole officiating. Call on Wednesday, October 17 from 5-8 PM at the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home, 500 East Broad Street, Tamaqua. Call on Thursday at the Primitive Methodist Church from 9:30-10:30 AM.

 Interment in the Valley View Cemetery, Jermyn, PA will take place at 11 AM on Friday, October 19. Memorial contributions in Alvin’s name may be made to the Primitive Methodist Church, 57 Hunter Street, Tamaqua, PA 18252.

John P. Dopkin, 96, a lifelong resident of Shenandoah, passed away on Friday morning.

Born in Shenandoah, December 27, 1921, he was a son of the late Simon and Agnes Lipsky Dopkin.

John was a decorated World War II Army veteran, having served in Pacific Theater of Operations.

Prior to his retirement, he was a supervisor at the former Purolator Products, Pattersonville.

He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah, and the former St. George Church. Earlier in life, he excelled in baseball, having been a left-handed pitcher for many minor league teams. He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan. John was a loving father, poppy and uncle.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Regina B. Bushek, on November 23, 2009; a son, Robert Dopkin; many brothers and sisters.

Surviving are two sons, John Dopkin and his wife, Gail, and James Dopkin; a daughter, Diane Cohen and her husband, Barry; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Divine Mercy Church, 232 W. Cherry St., Shenandoah. Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, pastor, will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. A viewing will be held from 8:30 until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Divine Mercy Church.

Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah, is in charge of the arrangements.

Joseph “Joe” T. Martin, 76, of Orwigsburg, passed away Friday, October 12th, at his residence, with his family by his side. 

Joe was born in Charleston, WV, on October 8, 1942, a son of the late Edith Laura (Skeens) and Warren Erskin Martin. He was the husband of Susan A. (Snyder) Martin. They were married on February 14, 1980. He was raised in the Baptist faith, and served in the U.S. Navy. Joe attended the University of Charleston and received his Masters from Virginia Tech. He worked as an accountant until he retired from Sapa in Cressona, PA, in 2013. Joseph was a golf enthusiast in his early years, an avid reader, and he enjoyed cooking and photography until his health declined. 

In addition to his wife Susan, Joseph is survived by two sons: Nicholas, husband of Caroline Edgeton-Martin, of Philadelphia; Patrick Martin, husband of Kayla, of Bethlehem, and their son Finnegan Joseph Martin. 

Also surviving are his two sisters, Margaret, wife of Edward Cavender, of Charleston, WV; and Anne, widow of Jerry Lewis, of Nellis, WV. 

A Celebration of Life Service for Joseph will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, October 19th, at Hamilton-Breiner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., in Orwigsburg, with Rev. Jeffrey C. Stonesifer officiating. 

There will be a Memorial Gathering from noon until time of service. Interment will be private. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Orwigsburg Food Bank, or the Orwigsburg Area Free Public Library.

George F. Carado Sr., 79, Ashland, passed away peacefully Saturday at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Schuylkill East, Pottsville, with his family at his side.

Born in Ashland he was the son of the late George and Josephine Manganelli Carado. He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator for Number 1 Contracting doing highway construction.

He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Ashland. He was a graduate of Butler High School, class of 1958. George served in the US Army in the engineering division in France and was also a graduate of the Army Airborne Jump School. He loved fishing, hunting and gardening but most of all enjoyed his family vacations at Myrtle Beach.

He is survived by his wife of 19 years Justine Chismar McCormick Carado, his two daughters; Maria and Janice, three sons; George and his wife Cindy, Tony and Vince and his wife Jennifer, his step-children; Scott and his wife Janice, Jason and his wife Becky and Matthew and his wife Melanie, his grandchildren; Cory, Dylan, Andrew, Dominick, Kyla, Jason, Tyler, Brett and Jocilyn and two great-grandchildren; Sophia and Oliver.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Ashland, with Rev. Paul Rothermel, pastor, as the celebrant. There will be no visitation prior to mass. Interment with military honors will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Fountain Springs.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers contributions, in George’s name, be made to either the Memorial Fund of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, 1115 Walnut St., Ashland, 17921 or to St. Judes Childrens Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
