Ashland Memorial Day Parade and Service Remember the Fallen

On Memorial Day, Ashland remembered those that died for our freedom during the annual parade and service.

The parade began at 11:00am at 21st Street and Walnut Streets and followed Walnut Street down to St. Borromeo Roman Catholic Church for the service.  In the past, the service has typically been held at the Mother's Memorial but organizers realized the church provided more seating.

The parade was led by Ashland Police Chief Gerard Daley who escorted Mayor Ray Walacavage.  Members of the American Legion Honor Guard followed behind along with Ashland Boy Scout Troop 745 and the North Schuylkill Marching Band.

Ashland Fire and Emergency apparatus followed behind with the American Hose Company escorting master of ceremonies Fire Chief Philip Groody and Guest Speaker Legion Service Officer Thomas Dando.

The service was held inside church with Groody welcoming everyone and Reverend Paul Rothermel offering prayer.

Nevaida Rau, of Gordon sang the National Anthem as well as God Bless America later in the service.

Mayor Walacavage provided his thoughts on Memorial Day and American Legion Commander Daniel Weikel thanked everyone who attended.

Groody introduced Dando as guest speaker, who spoke about his experiences in Vietnam and those who died in his battalion while he served.

He also read letters and poems from his fellow servicemen.

The program concluded with a benediction by Dando.
