Man Caught Stealing Package from Front Porch in Ashland

A man was caught stealing a package from a front porch in Ashland earlier this week.


According to police, on Wednesday, July 17, 2019, Ashland Police Officer Elizabeth Raibeck was dispatched to the 1300 Block of  Centre Street, for a report of a theft.

Raibeck and Chief Daley arrived at the scene where victim told police that she arrived home to see a male steal a package from her porch.

The victim followed the male and asked him to stop, which he did not.

She described the suspect as a male, with a beard, shorts, and camouflage work boots.  She said he also fled on a bicycle heading downtown on Centre Street.

Through security footage from the area, Chief Daley was able to identify the suspect as Joseph Gavalis, 55, .

Later that day, Officer Weikel made contact with Gavalis in the 1200 block of Walnut Street.  When asked about the package, Galavis led Officer Weikel to 9th and Chesnut Street where he ditched the package.

The package, which was said to have contained toy blocks, was returned to the victim.

Charges have been filed with Magisterial District Judge Christina Hale's Office charging Gavalis with theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.
