Schuylkill County Man Identified as Victim in Fatal 5-Car Accident on Route 183

A Schuylkill County man has been identified as the victim in a deadly 5-car accident in Berks County on Wednesday.


According to the State Police at Hamburg, the crash occurred around 10:55am on Route 183 in Upper Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, just south of Lucas Lane.

Police say the crash occurred when a vehicle driven by Jarett Zuber, 36, of Friedensburg/Wayne Township, was travelling northbound on Route 183 at a high rate of speed.  A second vehicle, driven by Mary Haas, 66, of West Lawn, was travelling in front of Zuber.

Upon approaching a downhill curve, Zuber travelled into oncoming traffic in the northbound lane

Zuber impacted the rear of Haas' vehicle causing Haas to hit the guide rail.

Zuber continued heading north in the southbound lane and impacted head on with a vehicle driven by Angel Dominguez Echevarria, 25, of Reading.  Perez's vehicle then struck the guide rail.

Zuber's vehicle continued north until he impacted head on with a vehicle driven by Jon Weltmer, 65,   of Harrisburg.

Debris from the crash also struck and damaged a fifth vehicle driven by Riley Carroll, 19, of Schuylkill Haven.

Police say Zuber was ejected from his vehicle during the crash and once his vehicle stopped, it caught fire.

Zuber was pronounced dead at the scene by the Berks County Coroners Office.  Zuber was also reported to be not be wearing his seatbelt.

Echevarria and his passenger William Dominguez Perez, 46, were reported to be have suffered serious injuries in the crash

Haas was reported to have suffered minor injuries.

Carroll, Weltmer, Weltmer's passenger, and Porter were not injured in the crash.

All vehicles, except for Carroll's was towed from the scene.

Assisting at the scene was the Strausstown Fire Company, Bethel Community Ambulance,  and Blatt Towing.
