Peter Kostingo, Jr, 80, of Gilberton, passed away Thursday, February 20, at the Lebanon VA Medical Center.

Born in Maizeville, he was a son of the late Peter, Sr. and Anna Powlick Kostingo.

He was a graduate of the former Gilberton High School. He was certified in Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration; certified in Heating and Air Conditioning Repair and completed Automobile Repair courses.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War having served with the 881st Ord Company, APO 165 in Europe and was last stationed at Fort Hamilton, NY.

He worked as a miner for Gilberton Coal Company until his retirement and previously worked for several local collieries.

Peter was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Darlene Thompson Kostingo, in 2015; and a son, Robert Kostingo, in 2012.

He is survived by two sons; Peter P. Kostingo, Frackville and Thomas Kostingo, New Holland; grandchildren; Max, Gabriel, Jesse, Zoe and Robert; great-granddaughter Addyson; a sister; Dorothy Merchlinsky; brothers; Joseph and John Kostingo, all of Gilberton; several nieces and nephews.

Divine Liturgy with burial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 29th, in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Maizeville; with Rev. Petro Zvarych, as celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with Parastas at 8:00 p.m and again Saturday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Albert L Gricoski Funeral Home, Frackville. Interment with Military Honors will be in St. John’s parish Cemetery, Frackville.

Phyllis “Mitzi” Mazzeo, 87, of Ringtown, formerly of Shenandoah, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, following her courageous battle with cancer.

Born Dec. 12, 1932, in Shenandoah, and after graduating from J.W. Cooper High School in 1950, Mitzi headed for the city. She lived in Jersey City and worked in Manhattan, until she married and settled in suburban New Jersey to raise her family.

Mitzi was preceded in death by her mother, Stella Jones, and spouse, Gabriel Mazzeo.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Mesarick and son-in-law, Andy Mesarick, with whom she was currently residing in Ringtown; daughters, Dyanna Moon and Tracy English; sister, Joann “Cookie” Dampman and brother-in-law, Robert Dampman; grandson, Nick Mesarick; granddaughter, Brittany (Mesarick) Musick and grandson-in-law, Steven Musick.

Phyllis got her nickname Mitzi because of her love of dance, music and Mitzi Gaynor. She loved “gallivanting” with family and friends, the theatre, celebrity gossip and her hometown of Shenandoah.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Phyllis’s life during a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah. C. Robert Yarnell, 72, of Ashland, PA passed away on Friday, February 21, 2020 at his home.
Born in Shenandoah, PA May 22, 1947 the son of the late Robert S. and Elsie A. (Whitner) Yarnell. 

He was a graduate of Williamson Trade School in Media, PA in 1968 and Penn State in 1972. He retired from the PA Dept of Corrections as a food service manager. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. 

He is survived by his wife Rita (Reichwein) Yarnell. Two sons and a daughter: Raymond Joseph and his fiance' Miriam Shankweiler , Macungie, PA; Rita Claire Yarnell, Hegins,PA; and Robert husband of Erica Yarnell, New Jersey. Four grandchildren: Jordan and Jacquelyn Motuk; Derek and Randy Yarnell. Four sisters and one brother: Jane and her husband Charles Reaman, Tamaqua; Ron and his wife Linda Yarnell, Ringtown; Jean and her husband Larry Wolfgang, Gordon; Judy Soule, Frederick, MD; Joyce Yarnell and spouse Ellen Berman, Harrington, DE. Nieces and nephews. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at 12:00 Noon from St. Charles Borromeo, Ashland,PA. Rev. Brian Miller officiating. Interment in Kimmels Cemetery, Barry Township, PA. Visitation from 10;30 AM to 11:45 Amin St. Charles Borromeo Church, Ashland. Memorial Contributions can be made to St. Charles Borromeo Church, 1117 Walnut St., Ashland,PA 17921.
