Victim Identified in Fatal Head-on Crash on Route 61 Early Saturday

The Pennsylvania State Police have identified the victim of a fatal crash on Route 61 early Saturday in Schuylkill County.

According to Troopers from the Schuylkill Haven Barracks, the crash occurred around 12:30am, Saturday, July 18th, 2020, in the northbound lanes of Route 61 in West Brunswick Township near the intersection with Coal Mountain Road.

Police say the crash occurred as Robert Nicholson, 42, of Hyattsville, MD was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes in an area where a concrete barrier divides the opposing lanes of travel.

Nicholson collided head-on with Christine Hernandez, 50, of Schuylkill Haven in the lane closest to the barrier.

Nicholson was pronounced deceased at the scene by a Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner.

Hernandez was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

State Police did not specify if they knew how or why Nicholson was traveling in the wrong lane.
