Schuylkill County Man Dies in Mining Accident near Williamstown

A Schuylkill County man died Tuesday in a mining accident near Williamstown.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Lykens, the accident occurred on Tuesday, October 27th, 2020 around 12:45pm at the Williamstown Mine #1, located on Mountainside Road at Colliery Road near the Schuylkill/Dauphin County line.

Trooper Daniel Gibson says that Daniel Shoener, 37, of Donaldson, was working approximately 1,000 feet below the surface when a rock fell and struck him, trapping him.

Police say the Shoener was extricated but had suffered blunt force trauma and died as a result of his injuries.

Shoener was pronounced dead at the scene by the Dauphin County Coroner's office.

Also assisting at the scene were the Mine Safety and Health Administration, Department of Environmental Protection, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mine Safety, and Life Team EMS.

The Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate the incident.
