Electric Heater to Blame for New Years Day Fire in Girardville

Fire officials have determined the cause of a fire in Girardville on New Years Day that injured a family of four.

Around 8:15am, Friday morning, emergency personnel were dispatched to the 200 Block of West Main Street in Girardville for a house fire.

Girardville Chief Frank Zangari was first on-scene and found heavy fire and smoke coming from 217 West Main Street with 4 victims on the front porch roof of the home.

A second alarm was dispatched adding an additional response from surrounding communities to the call including units from Northumberland County.

Chief Zangari reported that before fire crews arrived, neighbors jumped into action, retrieved a ladder, and rescued the victims from the roof.  No entrapment was reported after everyone escaped.

A Geisinger Life Flight and Medi-Vac helicopter were called to transport two children that suffered smoke inhalation.  Two adults, one with breathing problems and another with minor burns, were transported via ambulance.

Chief Zangari reported Friday afternoon that an investigation determined that the fire source was the cord of a space heater in the first floor dining room.

A GoFundMe has already been setup accepting donations for the family.
