Victim Identified in Fatal Motorcycle Crash on Route 901

 

The victim in a fatal motorcycle on Thursday has been identified.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven, the crash occurred around 5:20pm, on Thursday, September 23rd, 2021 on Route 901/Sunbury Road near the Interstate 81 interchange in Foster Township.

Troopers say a Volvo tractor trailer, driven by Williams Thomas, 51, of Bowie, MD, was traveling north on Route 901/Sunbury Road and Gregory Calkins, 20, of Pottsville, on a KTM Duke was traveling south.

Thomas told police that he did not see the motorcycle and steered across the southbound lane to make left turn onto Interstate 81.  Thomas ended up turning into the path of the motorcycle.

Calkins sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Schuylkill County Coroner's office.  Thomas was not injured.

The scene of the crash was investigated by the PSP Forensic Services Unit and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service.

Thomas was charged with careless driving.

State Police were assisted at the scene by Clover Fire Company, Minersville Fire, and Hammer's Towing.
