John E. Lavelle Jr., age 72 of Morea, passed away Monday at Lehigh Valley Hospital Schuylkill, East Norwegian St. In Pottsville. He was the son of the late Honorable Judge John E. and Anne (Cooke) Lavelle Sr.. He served with the United States Navy and was a proud member and retired from Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local 524 of Scranton.


He was an active volunteer with the Barnesville Boy Scout Troop 725 for many years. A fan of NASCAR, he enjoyed yearly trips with his niece Caitlin to the Pocono Raceway. 

He is survived by his wife of 43 years the former Janice Stetts, sons Andrew Lavelle of Morea and John E. Lavelle III and his wife Rachel of Williamsport, sisters Anne Prior and her husband David, Maureen West and her husband Lloyd, brothers Edward, Philip and his wife Anna Marie, Joseph, and James and his wife Michele and a brother in law Edward Stetts and his wife Kathryn as well as many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. 

He was the adoring pop-pop of twin granddaughters Alaina and Nora Lavelle. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral on Saturday morning at 9:30 AM from the David D. Jarrett Funeral Home of Mahanoy City. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Kevin P. Gallagher at 10 AM from St. Teresa of Calcutta Church in Mahanoy City. 

Interment with military honors will follow at Sky View Memorial Park in Hometown. 

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM and again on Saturday morning beginning at 8:30 AM. 

 Contributions in his name to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of the church would be appreciated and will be collected at the visitation.

Elizabeth T. “Betty” Luciani
, lifelong resident of Frackville, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday surrounded by her loving family just 3 days short of her 96th birthday.

Born at 119 E. Spring Street in Frackville, she was a daughter of the late Martin and Margaret Dougherty Condron. She worked as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania and in the domestics department for Boscov’s until her retirement.

Betty attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School and graduated from Frackville High School in 1946. She was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Frackville and the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary Council 2580 where she held the office of president from 1974 to 1977.

On February 5, 1955 she married Leo R. Luciani Sr. who passed away on January 24, 1988. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings: William Condron, Nancy Condron, Mary Condron, Helen Condron Fidler and Helen Pascowskie Wolfe.

Betty was affectionately known to her family as “mom mom” and is survived by her two children: Leo R. Luciani Jr. and his wife Kathleen, Frackville; Helen Marie Bardzak and her husband Gary of Marlin; her grandchildren: Renata Ann and her husband Jason Blozousky, Mary Elizabeth and her husband Benjamin Brownlee, Leo R. Luciani III and his wife Jennifer, Gary Michael Bardzak Jr. and his wife Tricia, Daniel F. Bardzak and his partner Ashlee Horning; her great-grandchildren: Keira Elizabeth Blozousky, David Joseph Luciani, Samuel Condron Brownlee, Oliver Martin Brownlee, Riley Anna Bardzak, Micah Patrick Bardzak and Landon Barrett Bardzak; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 8th at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Parish (St. Ann’s Church) with Rev. Giuseppe Esposito, pastor, as the celebrant. Friends are invited to her viewing at the church on Sunday, May 7th from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of mass. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in the Englewood section of Frackville.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer charitable donations be made in Betty’s name.
