Schuylkill County Broadband Task Force Endorses Comcast for COVID-19 ARPA Broadband Infrastructure Program

A collaborative effort by the Schuylkill County Broadband Task Force (BTF) has resulted in the endorsement of Comcast, a prominent internet service provider (ISP), for the COVID-19 ARPA Broadband Infrastructure Program.

The BTF, which operates as a sub-committee of the Schuylkill Chamber Infrastructure Committee, comprises leaders from the Schuylkill Chamber, Schuylkill County Government, Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29, the network of County libraries, and various community representatives.

The primary objective of the BTF has been to play a crucial role in the vetting process of local ISPs that intend to apply for the Capital Projects Fund Broadband Infrastructure Program, specifically targeting the COVID-19 ARPA Broadband Infrastructure Program. This program focuses on supporting eligible projects that aim to expand broadband access, either through line extension and development or the establishment of large-scale regional infrastructure.

A noteworthy aspect of the grant application process has been the strong encouragement for ISPs to obtain letters of support from local organizations. In line with its commitment to fostering collaboration, the BTF took the initiative to create a streamlined submission process for ISPs interested in applying for projects within Schuylkill County, with a special focus on addressing the needs of unserved and underserved communities.

On July 5, 2023, after a meticulous evaluation of each proposal using the Infrastructure Grant Guidelines as a benchmark, the BTF successfully completed its vetting process. As a result, the Schuylkill County Broadband Task Force proudly announced its endorsement of Comcast and issued a Letter of Support for the ISP's grant submittal to the COVID-19 ARPA Broadband Infrastructure Program.

Recognizing the importance of informing and empowering residents about broadband opportunities in Pennsylvania, the BTF recommends that individuals visit the PA Broadband Authority website at dced.pa.gov or contact them via phone at 717-720-1396. Moreover, residents with limited or no internet connectivity are encouraged to explore resources available at GetInternet.gov, which provides information about affordable internet services. Additionally, the BTF advises residents to inquire about affordability options through the Affordable Connectivity Program, reachable at 877-384-2575.
