Heavy Rainfall Causes Issues in Schuylkill County

A substantial bout of rainfall swept through Schuylkill County from Sunday into Monday, creating a series of challenges for residents and emergency personnel.

Data collected by the National Weather Service in State College showed that over two and a half inches of rain inundated Schuylkill County as a storm system moved out of our area Monday morning.

As night descended, not only did the rain persist, but the winds intensified, exacerbating the situation. Emergency personnel were worked throughout the night, clearing the aftermath of downed trees and power lines obstructing roads across the county.  Fire departments were also busy helping pump water out of basements.

Monday morning brought a challenging commute for many residents, with road closures reported in various areas. Landingville experienced the closure of roadways due to nearby creeks and small streams breaching their banks. In Hegins, several roads were impassable due to fallen trees, further complicating travel for residents.  Portions of the City of Pottsville were also plagued with water issues on the roadway.

As of the midday update on Monday, the rain is gradually moving out of the area.
