Prep Work for Route 61 Project on "The Grade" to Begin Early February


Some of the prep for the upcoming project to improve "The Grade" on Route 61 between St. Clair and Frackville is scheduled to begin early February.

According to Ronald J. Young, Jr., the District 5 Press Officer for PennDOT, a $115,574,431 contract has been awarded to J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pa.

On Monday, February 5th, 2024, work will begin on tree trimming/removal and utility relocation (PPL, Verizon, SCMA, and UGI operations. This initial work will concentrate on the area from Terry Rich Boulevard to just north of the Darkwater Road intersection and will last through mid-to-late spring. 

During this work both northbound and southbound lanes will be affected by short term lane restrictions.

This project includes full depth pavement reconstruction, safety improvements including realignment of several substandard curves, installation of a traffic signal at Darkwater Road, wider shoulders, reconstruction and/or rehabilitation of eight culverts and four retaining walls, a bridge, slope stabilization, message boards, sign structures, ADA curb ramps and miscellaneous construction.

The project covers Route 61 in Blythe, New Castle and Ryan Townships, and the boroughs of Frackville and St. Clair.
