Elizabeth M. (Lagaza) Gerenda (Betty), 90, of Pottsville, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2024, at Schuylkill Center in Pottsville.

Born in St. Clair on January 10, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Julia (Wiyda) Lagaza.

Elizabeth was a member of St. Patricks Church and was very devout to her faith. Elizabeth loved to cook, bake, and in her free time, play bingo. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her friends and family. While at Schuylkill Center, she cared about others first and put her needs second. Elizabeth is the former President of Scoop, and her and her husband looked forward to their yearly tradition portraying Santa and Mrs. Claus. Elizabeth was known for her kindness and love for everyone, and her beautiful spirit will live on through her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles (Bud) Gerenda Jr., and daughter, Patricia Yurkovich.

Surviving is daughter Bonnie and Ed Clemas; son, Charlie and Tammy Gerenda; daughters Charlotte Maley and Terri Paulis, 8 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren who she loved dearly.

Private cremation services have been entrusted to Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home, Pottsville.

Richard "Rick" L. Ameden, 75, of Minersville, passed away on Tuesday morning, April 9th, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, Allentown.

Born in Pottsville, on January 26, 1949, he was a son of the late Jean Anderko.

He was a graduate of Minersville High School and proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as a SGT.

Rick worked as a Technician for Verizon for over 20 years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting and repairing old radios and spending time with his nieces.

Rick is survived by a brother, Andrew Ameden, of Minersville and Judy, his companion of many years.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Interment will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at a later date.

Lord-Bixler Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Lester J. Krammes
, 89, of Camp Rd., Pine Grove, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2024 at home.

Born on June 5, 1934 in Rock, he was a son of the late Milton and Annie Ankenbrandt Krammes.

He attended the Stanhope Country School.

Lester was a private in the Army and Army National Guard

He had worked for Quaker Alloy Casting in Myerstown, Pine Grove Township, Pine Grove Borough and lastly worked construction with Number 1 Construction and Wagman Construction.

Lester enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, cutting grass and Western movies.

Preceding him in death were a daughter, Leslie Krammes; two brothers, his identical twin Leroy Krammes and Stanford Krammes; and a half brother Glenn Krammes.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Janet Becker Krammes; two sons, Rodney and wife Lisa Krammes of Pine Grove, Todd Krammes and companion Barb Miller of Auburn; a daughter Bonnie and husband Mike Gilbert of Pine Grove; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at the H. L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., Pine Grove, with SALM John Ziegler officiating. There will be a viewing on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Manbeck's Cemetery, Schuylkill Haven.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer contributions be made to the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA, 18 Wertz Dr., Pine Grove, Pa. 17963 in his memory.

Robert (Bob) L. Freiler, 88, of Orwigsburg and also Lakeland, Florida, passed away Thursday, April 11th, with his beloved wife by his side at his Lakeland home. Born in Pottsville on March 15, 1936, he was a son of the late Grace (Snyder) Bierman and the late Leslie Freiler.

He was the loving husband of Lillian Marie (Homovich) Freiler, married since May 22, 1982.
He was a graduate of Pottsville High School and was employed as a police officer for the City of Pottsville, ascending the ranks from sergeant to chief of police. After his retirement from the police force, Bob was employed as a detective in the Schuylkill County District Attorney's Office.

Bob's family was his entire world, and he never held back his love and affection. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan and New York Yankees baseball fan. Before his illness, Bob loved going on walks and sitting on his front porch chatting with neighbors.

In addition to Lillian, his wife of 41 years, Robert is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Sorokach, wife of Edward, son, Richard Freiler, husband of Tammy; and Bobby Freiler, husband of Alexa.

Bob is also survived by his grandchildren Kathy Gipe, Cory Sorokach, Michael Freiler, Bobby Freiler, Jr. and his two great grandchildren, Colin & Jillian Gipe.

A funeral Service will be held at Hamilton - Breiner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. in Orwigsburg, PA. on Monday April 22nd at 11:00 AM. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM. Interment will follow at Schuylkill Memorial Park, Inc. Schuylkill Haven, PA.

Sherry L. Challenger
, 61, of Tower City passed away Friday, April 12, 2024 at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville surrounded by her family after a courageous 9 month battle with cancer.

Born in Pottsville, October 17, 1962, a daughter of the late Bernard and Arlene Bowman. Sherry was a 1980 graduate of Williams Valley High School and a 1983 graduate of Pottsville School of Nursing where she became a registered nurse.

She was employed for 39 years at the Tremont Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, recently retiring due to her illness.

Sherry was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, the Tower City Women of the Moose where she was a past recorder, the Tower City American Legion, Orwin Gun Club, and the Williamstown VFW.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed writing poetry. Above all else, her husband, three sons, and grandchildren were the light of her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Readinger and a brother Bernard Bowman.

Surviving are her husband of forty years, Glenn G. Challenger; three sons, Glenn Challenger II (Theresa), Texas, Cory Challenger (Tina), Williamstown, and Christopher Challenger (Emily), North Carolina; four grandchildren, Logan, Zachery, Mary, and Ella; two sisters, Beverly Bowman, Wyomissing, and Peggy Schaeffer, Tower City; a brother, Darin Bowman, Schuylkill Haven; numerous nieces, nephews, many dear friends, and her beloved cats.

A Celebration of Sherry's Life will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at 6:00 PM from the Chapel of the Dimon Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5-6 at the chapel. Refreshments and a time of fellowship will follow at the Tower City American Legion.
