1st Sergeant Frank R. Scherer
, 77, of Cherry St., Pine Grove, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2025 in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Schuylkill East, Pottsville.

Born on February 19, 1948 in Taylor, he was the son of the late George and Barbara Nausley Scherer.

He received an Associates Degree in Accounting from the McCann School of Business.

Frank was an Army Veteran of 30 years, with war time Service in Grenada 1983. Sergeant Scherer's assignments included the 82nd Airborne, 10th Special Forces Group, US Military Academy, and the Defense Intelligence Agency.

He also worked at the Lebanon County Children and Youth for 12 years and the Lowe's Distribution Center in Minersville for 2 years.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Pine Grove. He was also a member of the Pine Grove American Legion and the Pine Grove VFW.

Preceding him in death were two sisters, Kathy Berkosky and Jane Watkins; and four brothers, Charles, George, Bruce, and James Scherer.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Alene L. Pooth Scherer; a daughter, Tabetha and husband Cameron Miller of Pottstown; a son, Michael Scherer of Lebanon; three grandchildren, Lexanne Miller, Jasmine Miller and Eric Scherer; one sister, Maribeth DePaolo of Taylor; a brother, Dennis Scherer of Bartlett, TN; two brothers-in-law, Robert Watkins of Scranton and Stanley Berkosky of Taylor; two sisters-in-law, Stephanie Gawel of Friedensburg, Jackie Walsh of Clarks Summit; several nieces, nephews in the Scranton and Clarks Summit Area.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at 6:00 P.M. at the H. L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., Pine Grove with Pastor David Botzer officiating. There will be a viewing on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will be held in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer contributions be made to either the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA, 18 Wertz Dr., Pine Grove, PA 17963 or the Pine Grove VFW, 140 S. Tulpehocken St., Pine Grove, PA 17963 in his memory.

John “Jack” Malarkey
, 91, of Tamaqua, died Thursday, June 5, 2025, in Coaldale. He was the husband of Jane (Stutzman) Malarkey, to whom he was married for 62 years this past August.

Born in Coaldale, Jack was a son of the late Raphael and Ellen (McGroarty) Malarkey. A 1951 graduate of St. Jerome Catholic High School in Tamaqua, he attended St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania, earned a Bachelor of Science from East Stroudsburg University in 1960, and a Master’s Degree in Administration from Lehigh University in 1970.

Jack began his teaching career in 1960 at Marian Catholic High School and served as assistant principal from 1970 to 1977. In 1977, he was promoted to principal, a position he held until his retirement in 1998. Even after retirement, Jack remained actively involved at Marian as a football and baseball official for over forty years and was a lifetime member of the Men of Marian.

He received the Panther Valley Shamrock Award in 1988 and was inducted into the Carbon County Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Marian Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. In 2021, he was honored with the dedication of the Marian Catholic High School Gymnasium in his name. In a culmination of his life’s work, Marian High School inducted Jack into the Distinguished Marian Alumni Hall of Fame in 2023.

In addition to his dedication to Marian High School, Jack was a former member of the Tamaqua Public Library Board and a current member of the East End Fire Company. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard, served with the Catholic Social Services Agency since its inception, was one of the first Eucharistic Ministers in the Allentown Diocese, and served as a minister and lector for approximately 35 years.

Jack was a member of the former St. Jerome Catholic Church and a current member of St. John XXIII Catholic Church, Tamaqua.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Malarkey; three sons, John and his wife Kathy of Jim Thorpe, James and his wife Lisa of Stoneham, Massachusetts, and Joseph and his wife Jennifer of Coopersburg, Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Rhiannon, Johnny, twins Jack and Emma, Donovan, and Kieran; and a sister-in-law, Joan Malarkey of Silver Spring, MD.

He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas, and a sister, Rose Malarkey.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, 307 Pine Street, Tamaqua, with The Rev. Robert Finlan officiating. A private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Call on Wednesday from 6 to 9 PM at Marian Catholic High School, 166 Marian Avenue, Tamaqua, and from 10 to 11 AM on Thursday in St. John XXIII Church social hall.

Arrangements are being handled by the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Tamaqua.

Elizabeth Miller, 68, former Ashland resident, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, East Norwegian St., Pottsville. Born at the former Ashland General Hospital, May 9, 1957, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Elizabeth (King) Miller. She attended the Schuylkill I. U. # 29, Mar Lin, and later worked at the Avenues Workshop. Elizabeth was a member of St, Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish, Ashland.
