Minersville’s defense made the first big play of the year when Brandon Adams intercepted a Halifax pass and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown late in the opening quarter. The Battlin’ Miners carried that momentum into the second quarter, with quarterback Dante Carr connecting on a 28-yard touchdown pass to Ty Atkinson to extend the lead to 14-0.
Halifax managed to close the gap before halftime with a touchdown pass as time expired, sending the teams into the locker room with Minersville holding a 14-7 advantage.
The second half, however, belonged to Minersville. Carr found Paiten LaPoint for a 26-yard touchdown strike midway through the third quarter before breaking free on a 36-yard touchdown run minutes later, pushing the Battlin’ Miners ahead 28-7.
Halifax answered with a 16-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, but Minersville sealed the win when Carr powered in from 11 yards out for his second rushing score of the night. Kicker Jordan Bowers was perfect on all five extra point attempts.
The Battlin’ Miners now turn their attention to Week 2, as they return home to host Shenandoah Valley.
