Explore Local Forests During “Walk in Penn’s Woods”



Residents are invited to step outside and celebrate Pennsylvania’s forests during Walk in Penn’s Woods on Sunday, October 5, 2025. 

Sponsored by the Schuylkill County Conservancy and the DCNR Bureau of Forestry, the statewide event features free guided programs that highlight the importance of woodlands to our environment, history, and communities.
Event Schedule in Schuylkill County

Learn Tree ID Basics – Weiser State Forest
  • Time: 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM
  • Location: Taylorsville Tract Parking Area, Weiser State Forest (40.7503159, -76.3933169)
  • Details: Service Forester Will Thomas will guide participants in identifying Pennsylvania’s most common trees and explain how forests support wildlife and water quality. Peak fall foliage will provide a colorful backdrop.
Tour the American Chestnut Tree Plantation – Pottsville
  • Time: 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM
  • Location: 81 Old Mill Road, Pottsville
  • Details: Visitors will see firsthand how the once-majestic American Chestnut is making a comeback through blight-resistant seedlings. Plantation owner Steve Zuk will share his work as a forest steward.
Visit the Penn State–Schuylkill Arboretum – Schuylkill Haven
  • Time: 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM
  • Location: Penn State–Schuylkill Campus, 200 University Drive, Schuylkill Haven (meet at the London Plane trees by the Health and Wellness Center)
  • Details: Arboretum curator Mary Ann Smith and student guides will lead a tour of nearly 500 trees, representing 78 unique species. Light refreshments will be provided.

Tour George’s Homestead – Auburn
  • Time: 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
  • Location: 254 Red Church Road, Auburn
  • Details: Landowner George Maroukis and Heather Wright will show how they are restoring property overrun by invasive plants and cultivating ginseng for sustainability. Visitors can also meet goats and chickens on-site.
Organizers encourage families, students, and nature lovers of all ages to join the day-long celebration. Walk in Penn’s Woods events are designed to inspire appreciation for Pennsylvania’s natural resources and highlight how forests contribute to clean water, wildlife habitat, recreation, and local heritage.

“These walks are a great way to enjoy fall scenery while learning about the forest around us,” said organizers. “We hope the community will come out and reconnect with nature.”

All programs are free, and no registration is required. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and be ready to explore.
