Hillside SPCA Extends Intake Hold Amid Parvovirus Concerns

The Hillside SPCA announced that its temporary intake hold on new animals will now remain in effect indefinitely as the shelter continues to battle an outbreak of parvovirus.
The decision follows the death of another dog at the facility, a loss the shelter described as “heartbreaking” and a reminder of just how serious and contagious the virus can be. While the current animals in Hillside’s care are vaccinated, the SPCA stressed that even vaccinated dogs are not entirely immune to parvo, making strict precautions essential.

“The shelter will stay under quarantine and be monitored closely to ensure no additional cases arise,” the Hillside SPCA said in its update. Volunteer activity will also remain limited in order to reduce risk and maintain safety protocols.

Adoptions will continue but will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as the shelter navigates this challenge.

Parvovirus, often deadly in dogs, attacks the gastrointestinal system and is spread through direct or indirect contact with infected feces. Vaccination is the best defense, the SPCA reminded the community, urging pet owners to keep their animals up to date on shots to protect not only their own pets but others in the community.

“We deeply apologize for the inconvenience this causes for our community and our county,” the Hillside SPCA team stated. “Please know that every step we are taking is done with the best interest of the animals and the public in mind.”

The shelter thanked the public for its understanding, compassion, and continued support during this difficult time.
