Minersville Area School District Closed Thursday for Third Consecutive Day Following Cybersecurity Incident

The Minersville Area School District will remain closed on Thursday, December 18, 2025, marking the third consecutive day of canceled classes as the district continues to respond to a cybersecurity incident involving its computer network.
District officials initially took the network offline earlier this week after security tools detected attempts to install malware on certain systems. As a precautionary measure, access to the network was shut down while the district works with cybersecurity specialists to investigate the issue and safely restore services.

According to the district, the incident involved ransomware, a form of malicious software that can lock files and demand payment to regain access. The matter has been referred to law enforcement, and officials said they have been advised not to release specific details due to operational and investigative security concerns.

The district emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages and that cybersecurity incidents are complex and time-consuming to fully assess.

As a result, classes will again be canceled Thursday for students attending the Junior/Senior High School, Elementary Center, and Llewellyn. However, all after-school activities will continue as scheduled.

Transportation will continue at normal times for students attending the Schuylkill Technology Center (STC), Intermediate Unit (IU), and alternative schools. Students who attend schools outside of the affected buildings are still expected to report as usual.

At this time, district officials said they do not know whether any student, parent, or staff information was compromised. Determining the impact on stored data remains a priority, though officials noted it is too early to provide definitive answers.

The district said it first became aware of the cybersecurity issue on December 15, 2025, and reiterated its commitment to restoring systems in a secure and controlled manner. Further updates will be shared with families as more information becomes available.
