Schuylkill County Soap Box Derby Champions Competing in World Championships This Week


Three young racers will represent Schuylkill County and the Pottsville Soap Box Derby this week at the 88th FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championships in Akron, Ohio.
Marcel LeBlanc, Alexandria Womer and Collin Kadingo earned their trips to Akron after winning their respective divisions during the Pottsville Soap Box Derby on May 16th.

LeBlanc will compete in the Stock Division after capturing the local championship in a car sponsored by Naftzinger Auto Wrecking.

Womer earned her place in the World Championships by winning the Pottsville derby’s Super Stock Division. Her car was sponsored by Womer’s Garage, Inc.

Kadingo will represent Pottsville in the Masters Division after driving the “Spirit of Mechanicsville” to victory in the local race.

The three champions will compete against other winners from across the United States and beyond at the Derby Downs track.

Race Week began Saturday, July 11, and continues through Saturday, July 18. Activities throughout the week include check-in, practice runs, preliminary competitions and events for the racers and their families.

The week culminates with the 88th FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby on Saturday, July 18. The Parade of Champions is scheduled for 8:10 a.m., with racing taking place throughout the day at Derby Downs. An awards ceremony will follow Saturday evening at the Akron Civic Theatre, according to the official World Championships schedule.

The Soap Box Derby is a youth gravity-racing program that has been held since 1934. Racers qualify for the World Championships by winning local events or earning points through the organization’s rally racing program.
