The parade was held Saturday, August 22, in Barnesville and featured fire apparatus, marching units, pipe bands, mummers and more.
Smulligan joined the Ryan Township Fire Company when he was 18 years old. He will celebrate his 85th birthday on August 29.
During his years with the company, Smulligan worked his way through the ranks, serving as a truck officer, assistant fire chief and fire chief. He now serves as a trustee and remains active with the organization.
“I’ve been through everything in this company, from knowing nothing up through the ranks,” Smulligan said.
Smulligan recalled how different the fire company was when he first became a member. At the time, the company operated two 1934 Hahn fire trucks that members occasionally had to push out of the firehouse to get started.
Protective gear was also limited.
“We had rubber raincoats and rubber boots. That’s all we had,” Smulligan said. “Now look at the equipment that’s here. It’s wonderful. I’m just so proud of them.”
Despite the changes in equipment and technology, Smulligan said the reason for volunteering has remained the same.
“To be able to help my neighbors and help the community—that’s what it’s all about,” he said. “The community has been very gracious to us, and we really appreciate it.”
With volunteer fire companies across Pennsylvania facing declining membership, Smulligan encouraged those considering the fire service to become involved.
“I would encourage them to please join,” Smulligan said. “We need them. We need them desperately because the service is dwindling.”
Smulligan said Ryan Township is fortunate to have a group of younger members helping carry the company into the future.
“It’s just a company that’s moving forward every day, and I appreciate them all,” he said.
