The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA PA) announced that the Schuylkill County park has been designated a 2026 Great Public Space in Pennsylvania through the organization’s Great Places in PA Program.
Sweet Arrow Lake County Park is one of eight locations across the Commonwealth selected for recognition this year and one of four honored in the Great Public Spaces category.
Located in Washington Township, the 184-acre county park features a 70-acre lake and a variety of plant, mammal, bird and fish species.
According to APA PA, the park’s development has been guided by a master plan completed in 2004 that emphasized sustainable stewardship, environmental education and passive recreation for visitors of all ages and abilities. Schuylkill County and numerous community partners have worked over the years to implement that plan.
While Sweet Arrow Lake serves as the centerpiece of the park, APA PA highlighted several other features, including the waterfall and overlook bridge, the “Owl’s Nest” interpretive area and “The Point” viewing area.
Those areas have become popular destinations for photography, concerts, family gatherings and other activities.
A network of trails winds through the park, providing visitors with opportunities to explore the natural surroundings. Recreational opportunities at Sweet Arrow include swimming, boating, disc golf, geocaching and trophy trout fishing.
Accessibility has also been incorporated into the park through features including a Braille Trail, Special Needs Fishing Access Area and the Youth Endeavor Grove.
APA PA also recognized Sweet Arrow Lake County Park's role as an outdoor classroom. Environmental education programs are offered at the park, while conservation projects such as its live stake nursery, habitat restoration efforts, native plantings and water quality improvements provide additional educational opportunities.
With use of the park continuing to grow and conservation remaining a priority, an update to Sweet Arrow Lake County Park’s master plan is currently underway.
The planning process is once again involving residents, stakeholders and multiple community partners. APA PA said the effort demonstrates a commitment to protecting the park while continuing to provide nature-based education and tourism opportunities.
Sweet Arrow Lake County Park joins Armstrong Great Lawn in Butler County, Centre Square in Northampton County and Plum Street Plaza in Delaware County as Pennsylvania's four Great Public Spaces for 2026.
Four additional locations, Croydon Woods Nature Preserve in Bucks County, the Ghost Town Trail System in Cambria and Indiana counties, Palmer Bikeway in Northampton County and Robert Porter Allen Natural Area in Lycoming County, were recognized in the Great Greenways/Trails or Preserves category.
The Great Places in PA Program was established in 2014 to recognize places that demonstrate successful planning and help build healthy, vibrant and sustainable communities.
With the eight locations selected for 2026, the program has now recognized 72 Great Places across 38 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.
APA PA said the annual designations also recognize the community leaders, government officials, planning professionals, organizations and residents whose partnerships and dedication help make the honored locations successful.
Sweet Arrow Lake County Park is owned by Schuylkill County and has become a popular destination for recreation, environmental education and community events in the county.
