Sheldon L. Shafer, 84, of Tamaqua, PA died on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in Hazleton, PA.

He was the husband of Mary (nee Newton) Shafer. Born in Mahanoy City, PA on December 22, 1932, Sheldon was a son of the late Edward L. and Martha (nee Mowery) Shafer.

A 1950 graduate of Tamaqua High School, he was a postman who retired after 31 years of service with the United States Postal Service. Sheldon served in the Army in Munich, Germany during the Korean War. A faithful member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tamaqua, he sang in the church choir for many years. Sheldon was a member of the former Coaldale Victory Band and a longtime member of the Cressona Band for which he was an ardent recruiter of new members. He also was a supporter of and a volunteer for the Tamaqua Raider High School Band. Sheldon was a member of the East End Fire Company, Tamaqua; the Hometown Fire Company; the Tamaqua Fire Police Association for which he was a former officer; and the Tamaqua Crime Watch for which he was past president. Sheldon was named Tamaqua Citizen of the Year in 1994 and was a tireless volunteer for the East End Playground in Tamaqua.

In addition to his wife Mary, he is survived by his brother Lee and his wife, Jackie of New Ringgold, PA; nephew Ben Shafer and his wife, Lisa of Hometown, PA; niece Rachel Shafer Brimmer and her husband, Michael of Hometown, PA; and great nephews, Samuel Titus Shafer, David Michael Brimmer, and Isaac James Brimmer. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Joel A. Yob, 64 of Pottsville, died Wednesday morning at home.

He was born November 22, 1952 in Pottsville son of the late Rudy and Catherine Dilliplane Yob.

He was 1971 graduate of Pottsville Area High School, Massanutten Military Academy, Woodstock, VA and attended Shenandoah University, Winchester, VA.

He was currently employed by NPP, Cressona.

Joel was a member Pulaski Lodge 216 F&AM, Pottsville; and Roedersville Rod and Gun, Pine Grove.

Surviving are his wife Frances Foran Yob, Pottsville; 2 sons, Kevin Yob and his wife Erin, Winston Salem, NC; Ryan Yob, Schuylkill Haven: 1 granddaughter, Kaydence Yob; and 1 grandson to be born soon, Konnor Joel Yob: 2 sisters, Gloria Guthrie and her husband Ray, Ephrata; Debbie Brennan and her husband Matt, Leicester, Mass: a sister-in-law Kathryn Mouro, Assonet, Mass; and adoptive brother, Ralph Falls, Jr. Pottsville: Nieces and Nephews.

A gathering of Family and friends will be held Saturday from 4-6P.M. at James E. Humphrey Funeral Home, Pottsville. The family would prefer remembrances in the form of contributions made to Hillside SPCA PO 233 Pottsville PA, 17901, Compassus Hospice 1001 James Dr., Suite B 34, Leesport PA, 19533 or American Cancer Society, 101 W. Frack St. Frackville PA, 17931.

Cynthia Ann Powanda, age 62, of Mechanicsville, PA passed away Wednesday, August 30th, 2017 at her home. 

Born in Pottsville, PA on May 27, 1955, she was the daughter of Russell and Pauline (Herman) Sadusky of MarLin. Cynthia was a graduate of Pottsville Area High School, Class of 1973. She worked for the United Cerebral Palsy in Mechanicsville for over 15 years. She was preceded in death by a brother Russell Sadusky Jr and a sister Carol Sadusky. 

Cynthia is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dennis James Powanda Sr., Mechanicsville; her daughter Stephanie Ann Powanda, Port Carbon; her son Dennis James Powanda Jr., Mechanicsville; 3 grandchildren: Angelique, Antonio, and Sabrina Bonacci, all of Florida; mother-in-law Marie Powanda, Port Carbon; and nieces and nephews. 

A Religious Service will be held at the Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home, 208 Pike St., Port Carbon at 9:30AM on Wednesday, September 6th, 2017. Relatives and Friends are invited to a viewing on Tuesday evening from 6-8PM and Wednesday morning from 8:30-9:30AM at the Funeral Home. Interment will be held in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville.
