Man in Custody After Crashing into 7 Vehicles on Route 61 in Pottsville

A man is in custody after crashing into 7 vehicles on Route 61 Friday morning.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven, the crash occurred just before 11:30am Friday.

Police say the crash occurred as a Ford Focus driven by Jeffrey McAnaney, 28, of Pottsville was travelling southbound on SR61 and struck seven (7) vehicles which were stopped at the traffic light at Arch Street near Pizza Hut.

As McAnaney traveled down the hill from Millcreek Avenue headed towards Arch St., some of the operators of the stopped vehicles began to pull to their respective sides of the roadway in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid impact.

McCananey told Police that he had lost his brakes while leaving St. Clair borough and could not bring his vehicle to a stop prior to plowing into the seven (7) stopped vehicles.

He advised that he drove in the middle of the lanes to try and squeeze through the middle of the vehicles but instead, sideswiped all seven. Nobody reported any injuries, and everyone reported that they were wearing their seatbelt.

McCananey was subsequently taken into custody for a drug related DUI.

The Pottsville Police also assisted at the scene.
