One Person Killed in Interstate 78 Crash Wednesday Afternoon

One person was killed and others injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 78 Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Hamburg, the crash occurred around 2:38pm, Wednesday in the westbound lanes of Interstate 78 near Milemarker 32.5 in Windsor Township, Berks County.

Police say westbound traffic was slowing and/or stopped in both westbound lanes for a single lane construction zone around mile marker 29 westbound.

A tractor trailer was travelling westbound and was unable to stop for the traffic ahead.

That tractor trailer first struck a passenger vehicle then that vehicle was then pushed into the rear of a another tractor trailer.

The chain reaction crash consisted of 5 tractor trailers and one passenger vehicle.

There was heavy fire involving two tractor trailers and the passenger vehicle that resulted in 3 injuries and at least one fatality.


The highway was completely shut down for over 4 hours.

East bound traffic began moving in one lane around 7:00 PM.

Both west bound lanes are still closed for the investigation and clean up.


Numerous Fire Departments from Berks, Lehigh, Lebanon, and Schuylkill Counties assisted at the scene.

The identity of the victim and others involved has not been released.
