Mahanoy City Police Charge Man for Stabbing

Mahanoy City Police have charged a man for a stabbing last week.

According to Mahanoy City Police, Ryan Shoup, 21, of Mahanoy City is accused of stabbing a male in the area of W. Market and B Streets on April 20th, 2018 around 10:30pm. 

Police say Shoup jumped out of a van that was travelling on the street, and then began assaulting the victim who was walking in the area. The victim was treated for a single abdominal stab wound at the Lehigh Valley Schuylkill South Hospital in Pottsville. 

Shoup was arrested at a residence in the 400 block of West Pine Street without incident. The knife used to stab the victim was also recovered at that residence. 

Patrolman Thomas Rentschler has charged Shoup with 2 counts of Aggravated Assault, 2 counts of Simple Assault, Possessing Instruments of a Crime, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, False Reports to Law Enforcement, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

He was then arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Plachko and was committed to the Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $50,000.00 straight bail. 

 A preliminary hearing will be held in the near future at Magisterial District Judge Kilker’s office. 

Mahanoy City Police Chief Kenneth Zipovsky said, "It is important to make the public aware that the victim and the offender were known to each other. This was not a random act.
