Spartan Band Works on Improving their Performances through Fitness

With football games and school starting in less than a month, the North Schuylkill Spartan Band was working on their overall fitness to help improve their performances.

For the second year in a row, North Schuylkill High School Band Director William Lennox has turned to physical trainer, Ed Pavalko, to help his band members keep the same level of energy throughout their performances.

"People don't realize that running around the field in a wool uniform, playing instruments, having all that coordination actually takes a lot of energy.  In year's past, we haven't been able to make the same impact at the end of our show that we did at the beginning, so last year we brought it Ed Pavalko to get us all in shape, and it turned out to be our best season last year" said Lennox.

Pavalko had students focus on their cardio with jogging, walking, high knees, jumping jacks, bursts of running, and other exercises that focused on longevity.

"The focus of the exercises were for them to pace themselves and play that 7 minute show without tiring"  said Pavalko.

Lennox said that they will be incorporating the exercises they learned today into their daily 4 hour practices until the season starts.
