One Injured Early Friday in Crash on Interstate 81

One person was injured early Friday in a crash on Interstate 81 in southern Schuylkill County.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Jonestown, the crash occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 about a mile and half south of the Pine Grove Exit.

Police say the one car crash occurred when Jonathan Armstrong, 48, of Yonkers, New York was travelling in the left lane and fell asleep at the wheel.

When Armstrong's GMC Yukon traveled off the left shoulder, he swerved to the right causing his vehicle to spin.  The driver's side of the vehicle struck a guardrail causing a passenger, Kayla Armstrong, 18, of Pocono Summit, to eject out the back window.

The Yukon then rolled several times.

Kayla Armstrong was transported to Hershey Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.  A third passenger in the vehicle, Taylor Davis, 23, of Pocono Summit was not injured in the crash.

Interstate 81 was close for a period of time until the scene was cleared.

Assisting at the scene was the Northern Lebanon Fire Department and fire police.

Armstrong will be charged with careless driving.
