Pottsville Mayor Seeks Third Term; Democrats to Seek Council Seats

A press conference was held Friday afternoon by Pottsville City Democrats to announce their candidacies for city seats.

The press conference, which was held in front of City Hall, was opened by Hugh Reiley, Schuylkill County Democratic Community Chairman, who introduced Pottsville Mayor James Muldowney, Council Member Mark Atkinson, and City Control William Messaros.

Mayor Muldowney announced he would be seeking a third term as Mayor.

"Pottsville is on a trajectory upward. Under this team’s guidance, while being surrounded by people who share the same affection for our great city, we continue to move forward even during challenging times. Buildings are being filled by legitimate businesses. Entrepreneurs want to come to the city of Pottsville. We have a proven track record that is only gaining notoriety regionally."  Muldowney said.

"The City of Pottsville, the Redevelopment Authority, the Pottsville Area Development Corporation, various other branches of government, and multiple local and county wide organizations have made visibly positive impacts on the City. Look around, our blighted buildings are being filled, we have a police force that keeps us as one of the safest cities in the state based on population, fire companies that are some of the top notch first responders anywhere, and a street department that ranks second to none." he added.

Mayor Muldowney was first elected to the office in 2013 and re-elected in 2017.

The Mayor then introduced Councilman Mark Atkinson who would be seeking a new term on council.

"As your councilman, I have had the honor of working on behalf of the citizens to make the City prosper. Let's continue that progress by electing a team with proven dedication & leadership. Together, we can continue to make Pottsville a great place to live & work." Atkinson said.

Next, City Controller William Messaros officially announced he would be seeking the council seat that will soon be vacated by Councilman Joe Devine.

"Today I am announcing my candidacy for a seat on the City Council of Pottsville. Having served as the City Comptroller since 2016, I have been privileged to experience first-hand how important a dedicated Council is to serving the highest level of service to the citizens of Pottsville" said Messaros.

Over the coming weeks, the candidates said they will be outlining projects they are working on and what their vision of the future of Pottsville will look like.
