Pottsville Man in Custody After Leading Police in Pursuit from Berks to Schuylkill County

A Pottsville man was taken into custody after a pursuit ended near Schuylkill Haven on Saturday.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Hamburg, the incident began on Route 61 north in Perry Township in Berks County.

Police say around 4:05pm, Saturday, they received several reports of someone driving a black Mercedes traveling north on Route 61 at a high rate of speed and driving erratically.

Troopers located the vehicle near the intersection of Route 61 and Jetson Drive.

After attempting to conduct a traffic stop, the driver refused to stop, a pursuit ensued to Port Clinton where troopers attempted to perform an "induced stop", but the suspect avoided the maneuver striking the front end of Trooper's patrol vehicle.

The suspect then rear-ended a Ford SUV in the area of Route 61 and Summer Valley Road in West Brunswick Township before fleeing at a high rate of speed.

The pursuit continued on Route 61 to where Troopers attempted a PIT maneuver which was unsuccessful but were able to utilize stop sticks which were successful but the vehicle continued to flee and troopers lost sight of the vehicle.

The driver and  vehicle were located a short time later in the parking of the Crossroads Inn located at 2 East Adamsdale Road near Schuylkill Haven.

The driver, identified as Jason Smith, 46, of Pottsville was taken into custody and transported back to the Hamburg Barracks.

Smith was found to have an active arrest warrant in Wyomissing after he struck a female and attempted to hit multiple police officers with his vehicle.

Smith was arraigned for the Wyomissing charges and additional charges for the pursuit were filed which included Aggravated Assault, fleeing and eluding police, driving under the influence, reckless endangerment, accidents involving injury, and other charges.

State Police from Hamburg were assisted by the Schuylkill Haven Barracks as well as Orwigsburg Police during the pursuit.
