Two Nurses, Police Officer Assaulted in Mahanoy Township

Three people were assaulted during an incident near Mahanoy City on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Mahanoy Township Police Chief Brandon Alexander, at 12:30pm, Wednesday, police were dispatched to the Silver Pine Treatment Center, on White Owl Drive, near Mahanoy City, for a disturbance.

At the scene, Chief Alexander learned from staff that one of the patients attacked two nurses and an ongoing altercation with other staff members was ongoing.

The attacker, Matthew Calloway, 36, of Ellicott City, MD, was found struggling with two staff members.  Police were able to subdue Calloway and place him in handcuffs and get him into a patrol vehicle.

Chief Alexander investigated and interviewed the two nurses involved.

The victims said that they went to check Calloway's vital signs when he began punching one of the nurses in the face until she blacked out.  He then turned to the second nurse and began attacking her until more staff intervened.

Both nurses were rushed to an area hospital with major head injuries.

While the interviews were taking place, a Mahanoy Township Police officer was head butted by Calloway in the chest while the officer adjusted his handcuffs.

Calloway was taken into custody, arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Kilker, Shenandoah, on charges of 3 counts of aggravated assault, 3 counts of simple assault, and 3 counts of harassment.

MDJ Kilker locked Calloway up in Schuylkill County Prison on $100,000 straight cash bail.
