Shenandoah Man Taken into Custody for Pointing Gun Inside Business

Police from Shenandoah and the surrounding communities responded to a report of an armed subject late Monday.

According to borough Police Chief George Carado, on Monday, August 23rd, 2021, at 8:20pm, Shenandoah Police responded to the La Parrilla Coffee Shop and Deli, (former Sand’s restaurant) at 201 East Centre St for a male inside with a gun. 

Two people inside told police that a male pointed a handgun at them inside the business while they were playing pool. Police identified the male as John Charles, 41, of Shenandoah as the man involved.

Charles was taken into custody at the scene and arraigned by Magisterial District Judge David A Plachko on 2 counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and 1 count of persons not to possess firearms and bail was set at $50,000 cash bail.

On Tuesday, Charles posted bail and was released.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 31st, 2021

Responding to the incident with borough police were departments from West Mahanoy Township, Mahanoy Township, Frackville, and Mahanoy City.

East Centre Street was closed for almost 2 hours while the scene was cleared.
