Pennsylvania State Police Investigating Fraudulent Check Scam in Schuylkill County

The Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven are investigating an incident where an Orwigsburg man was scammed out of over $1,000.

According to Troopers, on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022, the man reported to police that he had received a check for $1,940 in the mail.

The check came with a set of instructions that told the victim to deposit the check, then keep $400 as a commission.  The remainder of the money was to be used to purchase 3 Visa Vanilla Gift Cards for $500 each, take photographs of the gift cards and text the photos to a cell phone number and 2 emails.

The victim followed the instructions and was later informed by the bank that the check was fraudulent, and was scammed out of the money he spent on the gift cards.

State Police continued to investigate the incident.
