A wanted Minersville man was found hiding under debris in a basement Monday afternoon, leading to the arrest of two others after they allegedly attempted to conceal his whereabouts from law enforcement.
Matthew Engroff, 37, of Minersville, was taken into custody at 435 Pleasant Street by officers from the Minersville Borough Police Department, Pottsville City Police, and Branch Township Police. Engroff was wanted on multiple warrants, including assault charges from Northampton County and narcotics violations from Minersville Police.
According to a criminal complaint filed by Minersville Patrolman Eric Wilson, officers initially searched the residence earlier in the day but were unable to locate Engroff. All occupants were advised to contact police if Engroff returned or was seen at the property.
Later that day, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Schuylkill County dispatch received information that Engroff was back at the home. Officers returned and conducted another search, calling out his name repeatedly to no response. While searching the basement, authorities discovered a concealed area covered with debris. Patrolman Wilson climbed through the obstruction and found Engroff “hunkered down on the floor with objects stacked over him,” allegedly trying to hide from police.
Engroff reportedly admitted that he was aware of his wanted status at the time of arrest.
Two others at the residence—McKenna Johnson, 22, and Kathy Engroff, 59, both of Minersville—were also arrested and charged with felony hindering apprehension. Police allege both women were aware of Engroff’s presence in the basement and failed to inform officers, despite being asked multiple times during the initial search.
All three were arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Serina. Bail was set at $300,000 cash for Matthew Engroff and $100,000 cash each for Johnson and Kathy Engroff. All were remanded to Schuylkill County Prison.
Minersville Police were assisted at the scene by Pottsville Police, Reilly Township Police, and Branch Township Police.
