June Events Scheduled at the Schuylkill County Historical Society


The Schuylkill County Historical Society has announced their events scheduled for June.

Author Jim Kurtz will discuss his book about his search for information about his father, a World War II pilot who survived a Nazi prison camp, at a meeting of the Schuylkill County Historical Society and radio station T102’s Local Reads book club at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at the Schuylkill County Historical Society, 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville. “The Green Box” also features Pottsville native Joe Spontak, who was the navigator for Kurtz’s father. Reading Deputy Fire Chief and local historian Michael Glore will discuss Hurricane/Tropical Storm Agnes, which devastated parts of Schuylkill County in June 1972. The program, sponsored by the Schuylkill County Historical Society, will be held at the Majestic Theater, 209 N. Centre St., Pottsville, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15. Local historian Stu Richards will discuss “In the Depths of a Coal Mine,” an 1894 article that “The Red Badge of Courage” author Stephen Crane wrote about his visit to a Scranton coal mine. Admission to the program, to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, at the Schuylkill County Historical Society, is free to members and $5 for the general public.
