Suspect Captured in Mount Carmel Shooting and Police Pursuit

The suspect in a shooting and police pursuit in Mount Carmel late Friday has been taken into custody.

According to the Mount Carmel Borough Police Department, officers were dispatched around 11:45pm on May 6th, 2022 to a report of shots fired in the area of Dorko’s bar in the 100 block of South Poplar Street.

Officers were notified that a silver sedan which was occupied by the suspect in the incident was attempting to leave.

At the scene, a male gunshot victim was located. The male suffered a gunshot to his arm and stomach.

Police began performing life-saving measures on the male including applying a tourniquet to his arm to stop heavy and profuse bleeding and requested Emergency Medical Personnel.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle involved which resulted in the vehicle engaging in a high-speed pursuit. As a result of the vehicle traveling at high speeds, it crashed in the area of Second and Plum Streets.

Officers were unable to see into the vehicle due to heavy window tint and utilized a non-lethal beanbag shotgun to break the rear window to see inside. It was determined that no one was inside the vehicle.

K9 Blek conducted a scent track from the vehicle to a residence. Officers later learned that the address the vehicle was registered to was the address K9 Blek led them to.

After a thorough investigation, the shooter/suspect was identified as Bruce A. Thompson Jr., 36, of Shamokin. It was learned that Thompson took another vehicle after crashing his vehicle and fled to an unknown location.

A "Be on the Lookout" was issued for Thompson, who was eventually taken into custody around 11:00pm, on Saturday night.

He was taken to Northumberland County Prison where he is waiting for arraignment.
