Gerald J. (Jerry) Burke, 67, of Mahanoy City, PA, passed away Friday, June 17th, at Lehigh Valley East Norwegian, Pottsville.

Gerald was born in Mahanoy City, PA on March 29, 1955, a son of the late Rose (Brennan) and Francis Burke.

He was a member of the West End Fire & Rescue Company Mahanoy City. He graduated from Mahanoy Area High School class of 1974. Jerry worked at J.E. Morgan Knitting Mill, Schuylkill Mall and Amazon. He enjoyed playing pool, Pinochle and music.

Gerald is survived by a sister, Mary Tempest, of Tunkhannock; a brother, Francis, husband of Nancy, of Mahanoy City; five nieces Angela Sabaday and husband Scott and two children; Sherry Zilker and husband Kevin and two children; Colleen Newswanger and husband Cale and two children; Kelly Myer and husband Scott and three children; and Stephanie Marino and husband Tim and two children.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Richards Church, Barnesville, at 11 am on Wednesday, June 22nd, with Rev. Robert Finlan officiating.

Friends and family may call Wednesday 10 to 11 am at St. Richards Church.

Interment is private at the convenience of the Family St. Canicus Cemetery Mahanoy City, PA.

In Lieu of flowers make memorial contributions in Jerry’s name to Mahanoy City Little League.

Terrence “Terry” Francis Gownley Jr., born March 12, 1946 in Lost Creek, PA, and his wife Margaret “Peggy” Ann Gownley (nee McAndrew), born August 23, 1946 in Ashland, PA have passed away. Peggy passed away on October 12, 2015 at their home in Houston, TX after losing her battle with breast cancer, and Terry passed away on March 2, 2021 at Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital in Houston, TX from heart disease caused by decades of high blood pressure.


They were preceded in death by their eldest son Terrence Francis Gownley III of Houston, TX, and are survived by their remaining son Michael Anthony Gownley, who resides in Tabernacle, NJ. Terry was preceded in death by his elder sister Sally Ann Wood of Manville, NJ, who is survived by her husband Thomas Wood, and is survived by his younger sister Catherine Staskel, who resides with her husband Ronald Staskel in Charlotte, NC. Peggy was preceded in death by her younger brother Michael McAndrew and his wife Lorraine McAndrew of Ashland, PA, and is survived by her remaining brother Thomas McAndrew, who resides with his wife Jane McAndrew in Pottsville, PA. Terry and Peggy were blessed to be loved and forever missed by four grandchildren, Rebecca, Makenzie, Coleman, and Taylor.

A religious ceremony will be held on Friday June 24, 2022 at 11:00 am at the Annunciation Chapel, Annunciation BVM Cemetery, 29 Cemetery Road, Shenandoah, Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian will officiate. Terry and Peggy will be laid to rest with Peggy’s parents Michael and Isabel McAndrew (nee Vernitsky) who were welcomed into heaven decades ago. We welcome all to attend this celebration of Terry and Peggy’s lives.

Carol A. Hughes
, 84, of Ashland passed away Friday morning at Broad Mountain Nursing Center-Frackville.

She was born on November 23, 1937 in Ashland and was the daughter of the late Ethel (Hoffman) and Earl Gruber.

Carol was of the Lutheran faith.

Carol was a graduate of Ashland High School class of 1955.

She was the wife of the late Edward H. Hughes, Sr. who passed away in 1976.

Early in her career she worked for A&P Grocery-Ashland and then later for many years as a bartender at the Good Fellowship Club-Ashland.

Carol was the former President of Ashland Little League Ladies Auxiliary.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by; brother Robert Gruber; daughter Amy Billus; son Randy Hughes.

Carol is survived by; son Edward H. Hughes Jr. husband of Tracy, Gordon; son Fred Hughes husband of Tara, Gordon; son Kevin Hughes husband of Marci, Wyomissing; 16 grandchildren Eddie, Eric, Rachael, Freddie, Felecia, Tyler, Alec, Tristan, Alex, Matthew, Luke, Mark, Seth, Nathan, Mya & Arielle; 11 great grandchildren Harper, Jaxon, Jack, Josie, Piper, McKaylee, Jayden, Liam, Elleira, Areya, & Lyla; many nieces and nephews.

A service will be held on Wednesday June 22nd at 11am at the funeral home with Rev. Dana Beil officiating. A viewing for family and friends will be held on Tuesday June 21st from 6-8 PM at the funeral home and Wednesday morning from 10-11 AM at the funeral home. Burial will take place following services at Brock Cemetery-Ashland.
