Super DIRTCar Series to visit Big Diamond Speedway Tuesday

For the second consecutive year, the stars and cars of the Super DIRTCar Series returns to Big Diamond Speedway for the running of the $7,500 to win “Anthracite Assault”.

2022 saw the traveling series return to Big Diamond after a 13-year absence with Matt Sheppard notching the win in a close race over Stewart Friesen. Sheppard took the lead from former Big Diamond track champion Ryan Godown on lap eleven and never looked back, winning his third career feature at the dirt oval nestled in the mountains of Schuylkill Valley.

The Super DIRTCar Series has run five races so far in 2023 with Mat Williamson winning the first two at Bridgeport Motorsports Park and Weedsport Speedway. The series next moved to the high banks of Lebanon Valley with defending SDS champion Matt Sheppard taking the win. Albany-Saratoga Speedway was next up with “The Hile Driver” Chris Hile winning his first ever SDS race. Two days ago, at the Orange County Speedway it was Sheppard winning his second race on the tour.

Matt Sheppard currently leads the SDS point standings with a 35-point advantage on Mat Williamson. Peter Britten sits in third place with Jimmy Phelps and Chris Hile completing the top five. All the platinum SDS drivers are set to compete on Tuesday. Drivers such as Larry Wight, Mike Mahaney, Darren Smith, Adam Pierson, Max McLaughlin, Anthony Perrego, Jack Lehner, and others are set to invade the speedway all looking to get their first SDS win of the season. Our neighbors to the north in Canada will also be well represented with Steve Bernard, JF Corriveau and Felix Roy making what I believe will be their first visits to Big Diamond.

Local drivers expected to compete for the $7,500 first place prize on Tuesday night are Jeff Strunk, Billy Pauch Jr, Mike Gular, Alex Yankowski, Matt Stangle and others.

This will be the fifth time the Super DIRTCar Series has visited Big Diamond Speedway with previous wins going to Duane Howard, Brett Hearn, Alan Johnson and last year’s winner Matt Sheppard.

Filling out the racing card on Tuesday night are the super competitive USS Achey, Inc. Crate 602 Sportsman division along with the Red White and Blue Autos Roadrunners. Both divisions will compete for full points enroute to the season ending championships.
