The Pennsylvania State Police announced late Thursday that a suspect is in custody and charges have been filed for his involvement in an officer involved shooting in Scranton.

According to a release, late Wednesday, January 10th, 2024, and early Thursday, January 11th, 2024, Scranton Police were dispatched to the Scranton Hill in South Scranton for a report of shots fired at a home.

A canvass of the area was done and led to the finding that a 2006 Ford Fusion was involved in the incident.

Around 4:30am, Thursday, Scranton police discovered the suspect vehicle in West Scranton on Sweatland Street.

A search of the area led to an encounter with the suspect on North Decker Court.  The suspect, upon being confronted, opened fire on the officers, resulting in one officer sustaining a head injury.  In response, another officer returned fire, successfully striking, and apprehending the suspect.

Both the wounded officer and suspect were transported to a nearby hospital.  The officer's injuries are deemed life-threatening, while the suspect's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect, who has not been identified yet, was in the company of Jeremiah Cleveland, 19, of Mayfield, during the original shots fired call in the Scranton Hill section.

Cleveland has been charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied structure, firearm carried without a license, recklessly endangering another person, and criminal use of a communication facility.
