Florida Man Charged with Homicide for Berks County Truck Stop Shooting

A Florida man is in custody and facing homicide charges for a shooting that occurred a truck stop in Berks County last week.

According to a release from the Pennsylvania State Police at Hamburg Barracks, the incident occurred on Friday, March 22nd, 2024, just before 3:00am, in a back parking lot area of the Love's Travel Stop, located at 3700 Mountain Road, in Upper Bern Township, just off of Interstate 78.

An investigation found that an argument occurred between two males, one of them being James Alexander Hilton, 40, of South Hampton, New Jersey and the other being Travis Pugh, of Jacksonville, Florida.

The argument escalated with Pugh shooting and killing Hilton.  Pugh then fled the scene in his truck.

A description of the suspect's truck was given to law enforcement where the Pennsylvania State Police from Fogelsville located it at the Interstate 78 westbound exit 45 ramp in Lehigh County.  Police followed and a traffic stop was conducted in the area of exit 40 where Pugh was taken into custody around 3:30am.

Pugh has been charged with murder in the 1st degree, murder in the 3rd degree, possession of a firearm without a permit, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, tampering with evidence, disorderly conduct, and harassment.

Pugh remains locked up in Berks County Prison due to being denied bail.
