Pottsville Mayor Mark Atkinson Announces Resignation Due to Health Concerns

For the second time in less than a year, the city of Pottsville will begin the search for a new mayor following the resignation of Mayor Mark Atkinson.

Mayor Atkinson, who was appointed to the position in late 2024 after the resignation of then-Mayor Dave Clews, announced Saturday that he will be stepping down due to health reasons linked to his military service.

In a statement provided to Skook News, Atkinson cited complications from his time serving in Iraq as the primary reason for his decision.

“I have an illness from my exposures in the Iraq war which has caused cardiac problems. I was recently hospitalized, and testing revealed concerning changes. My healthcare providers have told me that I need to make changes in my life which includes cutting as much stress as possible. I need to step away for my own wellbeing,” Atkinson said.

“I am very grateful to the citizens for allowing me to serve them for over 15 years. It has been an honor to represent the people of Pottsville, and I wish all the best for a successful and vibrant City.”

Atkinson had served on Pottsville City Council since 2010 and was formally appointed mayor during a special council meeting on November 7, 2024, following the September resignation of Mayor Clews.

City officials have not yet announced a timeline or process for selecting a replacement. Atkinson was not running for the office in the upcoming election.
