Nancy Kabana, 85, of Tamaqua, passed away peacefully on May 28th at her residence. She was the wife and high school sweetheart of Lawrence Kabana, to whom she was married for 52 years at the time of his death in 2014.
Born in Coaldale, Nancy was the youngest child of the late Carl and Fannie (Hosler) Wolfe. A 1957 graduate of Tamaqua High School, Nancy was a social butterfly who enjoyed staying in touch with her friends and planning and attending her class reunions.
She worked for many years at the Sears & Roebuck catalog store in Tamaqua and later as a teller at various banks in the Lansford and Tamaqua area. Nancy was a supportive military spouse while her husband served in the United States Army and the United States National Guard.
Nancy and Lawrence were both devoted members of the American Legion C. H. Berry Post #173. Nancy often referred to the members of the Tamaqua Legion Post as her “Legion Family.” She served as the Tamaqua Auxiliary Unit Treasurer and Secretary for many years and volunteered for many Legion events, including raffles and breakfasts. She was a regular planner of the Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day festivities. This past Memorial Day marked her first absence in many years. She never sat still during Legion events; always walking around with her apron on, taking care of things. “Sit down, Nanc,” could usually be heard—but you wouldn’t catch her listening.
Nancy was a very loving, devoted mother and matriarch. She loved hosting parties, attending her sons’ sporting events, her annual trips to Michigan and Virginia Beach, and her more regular visits to Orwigsburg. You could always count on Nana to send a card for every holiday and birthday. She would always call and sing “Happy Birthday,” ending with her famous, “Boop-Boop-Boop-Bee-Doop”!
She loved her older siblings and looked up to them very much. Nancy enjoyed trips with her brother and taking long car rides or the train to visit her sister in Virginia Beach. She looked forward to her nightly ritual of speaking to her sister or listening to weekly church services together on the telephone.
Surviving are two sons, Kevin Kabana and his wife Paula of Davison, Michigan, and John Kabana and his fiancée Chrissy Slog of Tamaqua; four grandchildren, Leanne Stuart, Michael Kabana, Brett Kabana, and Katie Kabana; seven great-grandchildren, Brayden Kabana, Isabella Larkin, Kaylee Kabana, Jett Kabana, Rory Stuart, Kayden Kabana, and Kinsley Kabana.
Also surviving are a sister, Beverly Agnor and her husband Robert of Virginia Beach, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Melody Kabana; two nieces, Wendy Schuld and Lori Agnor; two nephews, Lawrence Agnor and Scott Wolfe; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends—all of whom were considered her family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence; a brother, Robert Wolfe; a sister-in-law, Joy Wolfe; a brother-in-law, Daniel Kabana; and a nephew, Dennis Wolfe.
Services will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, June 3, in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 109 North Greenwood Street, Tamaqua, with The Rev. Cindy White officiating. Interment in Sky-View Memorial Park, Tamaqua, will follow the services. Call Tuesday from 9 to 11 AM in the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Nancy’s name may be made to American Legion, Auxiliary Unit #173, 206 West Broad Street, Tamaqua, PA 18252.
