The Shenandoah Valley High School auditorium was filled with music and memories on Thursday evening as the school’s annual spring band concert took on special meaning.
During the performance, a plaque and photo were dedicated in honor of Edward J. McDermott, the beloved former Director of Bands who shaped generations of student musicians from 1937 to 1975.
Affectionately known as “Pro” by his students, McDermott left an indelible mark on the Shenandoah Valley music program. Though he passed away in 1986, his legacy lives on through the many lives he touched over nearly four decades of teaching.
The dedication was made possible by several of McDermott’s former students, including Cheryl Keithan Kostowskie, Susie Keithan Chuplis, and Edward Tobin. The trio returned to their alma mater to help present the plaque and photo, which will now hang proudly in the band room as a tribute to their mentor.
They were joined for the dedication by current Shenandoah Valley band director John P. Shoener.
