In a tribute to the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the Washington Fire Company in Ashland held a memorial service Thursday evening on 13th Street.
The event, hosted by the Washington Fire Company Women’s Auxiliary, brought together community members, first responders, and local leaders to reflect on the tragic day that reshaped the nation.
The Ashland Boy Scouts served as honor guard for the event.
Schuylkill County Sheriff Joseph Groody delivered remarks, recounting the shocking moments when he first learned of the attacks. He reminded the audience of the importance of preserving the memory of that day and read a speech he has shared at September 11th ceremonies throughout the years, emphasizing the unity and resolve that emerged from the tragedy.
Ashland Fire Chief Charles Orth also addressed the gathering, expressing gratitude to fellow first responders and surrounding departments who continue to provide vital support through mutual aid. He thanked local dignitaries and the community for their ongoing commitment to honoring both the victims and the heroes of 9/11.
Among those in attendance were Schuylkill County Commissioners Larry Padora and Baron Hetherington. Firefighters and EMTs from across the region joined the Washington Fire Company, including representatives from the American Hose Company of Ashland,and the Rangers Hose Company and the Girard Hose Company of Girardville.
