Schuylkill County High School Football Power 5 - After Week 2

The second week of the 2025 Schuylkill County High School Football season brought more fireworks, another round of lopsided wins, and a few defensive slugfests.

As teams begin to settle into their rhythm, a clear picture is emerging of the county’s top contenders.

Each week, Skook News will feature the “Schuylkill County High School Football Power 5” — a ranking designed to go beyond simple win-loss records. These rankings weigh overall strength, quality of opponents, margin of victory, head-to-head results, and recent momentum.

Here are the updated Week 2 rankings:

1. Schuylkill Haven (2-0)

Previous Ranking:  4

The Hurricanes continued to live up to their No. 1 ranked Class AA team in the state with a dominant 54-0 rout of Panther Valley. Schuylkill Haven scored on all six first-half possessions to take a 48-0 lead into halftime. Niko Carestia, Niko Castillo, Max Heim, Blake Rossi, and Logan Goad all found the end zone in a balanced attack. With 88 points scored and just 27 allowed through two games, Haven has the look of a state contender.  Week 3 Opponent:  Shenandoah Valley

2. North Schuylkill (2-0)

Previous Ranking:  1

The Spartans have shown no letdown through two weeks, dismantling Tamaqua 50-7 on Friday. Quarterback Caden Mengel threw for 214 yards and three touchdowns, while senior star Luke Miller rushed for 116 yards and three scores, including an 82-yard breakaway. Wideout Landen Smith added 130 receiving yards and two touchdowns. North Schuylkill has now outscored opponents 112-27, and looks every bit as dangerous as last season’s powerhouse squad.  Week 3 Opponent:  Notre Dame Green Pond

3. Williams Valley (2-0)

Previous Ranking: 2

The Vikings are carving out their place as one of the most complete teams in the region. Behind a punishing ground game led by sophomore Fletcher Thompson (163 yards, 2 TDs) and quarterback Brady Shomper, Williams Valley blanked Mahanoy Area 42-0. That makes it two straight shutouts to start the season, with a combined scoring margin of 96-0. The defense has been lights out, and the offense keeps finding new ways to score.  Week 3 Opponent:  Nativity BVM

4. Minersville Area (2-0)

Previous Ranking:  Honorable Mention

The Battlin’ Miners celebrated their 2nd win with a 49-6 rout of Shenandoah Valley. Paiten LaPoint stole the show with four touchdowns in three different ways — two receiving, a punt return, and a kickoff return — while racking up 227 all-purpose yards. UCF commit Dante Carr threw for three scores, and the Miners’ defense tallied six sacks while holding SV to just 65 total yards. Minersville’s playmakers give them big-time upside.  Week 3 Opponent:  Mahanoy Area

5. Marian Catholic (2-0)

Previous Ranking:  Not Ranked

Defense ruled the night in the Colts’ 17-14 victory over Tri-Valley. Marian held the Bulldogs to just 72 total yards and four first downs, forcing three turnovers including a 55-yard fumble return touchdown by Damian Rodino. Offensively, Tyler Price provided the spark with an 85-yard TD reception from Greg Tirpak. After being swept by Tri-Valley last year, Marian flipped the script in Week 2 and proved they’re ready to contend in the Schuylkill League.  Week 3 Opponent:  Panther Valley

Honorable Mention: Nativity BVM (2-0)

The Green Wave followed up last week’s rout of Holy Redeemer with a gritty 12-6 win over Pine Grove. Quarterback Colt Mason scored both touchdowns and finished with 87 rushing yards. But the defense sealed the win with a fourth-down stop inside the 15-yard line with just over a minute remaining. Nativity may not have the flash of some other teams in the rankings, but they’re unbeaten and showing resilience early in the season.  Week 3 Opponent:  Williams Valley
