Emergency crews were called to the scene of a building collapse Thursday night after a former synagogue gave way along a borough street, narrowly missing nearby vehicles.
Around 9:20 p.m., first responders were dispatched to the area of South Catawissa Street and West Mahanoy Avenue for reports of a church structure collapsing.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel found that the former synagogue at 300 West Mahanoy Avenue had partially collapsed outward into South Catawissa Street.
Debris from the structure spilled into the street and came close to several parked vehicles, but no injuries were reported, according to responders at the scene.
Fire and emergency crews remained on location for approximately one hour, securing the area and checking for hazards before turning the scene over to Mahanoy City Borough officials.
Utility crews from PPL Electric Utilities also responded and removed or secured nearby wires that were affected by the collapse.
The building has long been vacant. Property records show the structure most recently changed hands in November of 2025 and was purchased by Goelbis Daracena Zapata of Mahanoy City for $10,000.
Officials have not yet released information on what may have caused the collapse, though age and structural deterioration is believed to have been a factor.
Skook News will provide updates as more information becomes available.
