Joe Gerchak Honored for 50 Seasons as PIAA Official



The local high school basketball community came together Friday night for a special tribute prior to the Schuylkill League Girls Basketball Championship, honoring one of the area’s most respected figures in scholastic athletics.
Veteran official Joe Gerchak was recognized before the championship game at Martz Hall for completing his 50th season as a basketball official under the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), a milestone few reach in the sport.

Gerchak’s career has spanned a half-century of high school basketball, marked by countless games across the Schuylkill League and beyond. 

The honor came just before the Schuylkill League girls’ championship matchup, where Schuylkill Haven claimed its second consecutive title with a commanding performance. While the focus was on the court, officials and fans alike took time to celebrate Gerchak’s longevity and impact on the game.

A fixture at high school sporting events for decades, Gerchak’s experience and steady presence have earned him respect from players, coaches and peers. His work has not been limited to basketball;  Gerchak also continues his involvement in other sports, including football and baseball.
