Former Homeowners Charged After Allegedly Breaking Into McAdoo Property

Two Hazleton-area residents are facing felony charges after police say they broke into a home they previously owned Monday night in McAdoo.
According to McAdoo Police, officers were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. on March 16, 2026, to the 100 block of East Washington Street for a report of a burglary in progress.

Upon arrival, police observed that a rear basement door to the home had been broken in half, and lights were on inside the residence. Officers made contact with the current homeowner, who told police she had recently purchased the property and that no one should have been inside.

After additional officers arrived, police entered the home through the damaged door and located Carlo M. Basile, 62, of Hazleton, and Lisa Marie Kapes, 51, of Hazle Township, on the first floor.

Both individuals were taken into custody without incident.

Police say Basile and Kapes admitted to breaking the rear basement door to gain entry and also damaging a wooden kitchen door at the top of the basement steps. The pair reportedly told officers they were the previous owners of the home and did not agree with the sale of the property.

Both were transported to the McAdoo Police Station for processing.

Basile and Kapes have each been charged with burglary, criminal trespass, loitering and prowling at nighttime, and criminal mischief.

They were arraigned before on-call Magisterial District Judge Christian Lengel and released on $25,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 8, 2026, before Magisterial District Judge Edward Tarantelli.
